How can an outside writer understand my business and my customers?
A copywriter needs experience of the communications 'medium' in use, rather than specifically of the
industry or product. For example, to write a sales letter for a financial adviser, it's more important
to have experience in writing sales letters than to have experience in financial services, even when
compliance issues come into play. The same marketing principles apply across most industries/fields, and
we always spend time understanding your customer – the reader – before we write.
We have lots of compliance issues in our industry. How can a writer work within these constraints?
We've worked with financial advisers and lawyers, probably two of the most regulated professional
services! It's all about applying solid marketing principles within these constraints – and those
principles remain the same, whatever the industry.
We have a PR company. Can't they write for us?
They may be able to – and so it's worth asking. It could also be included as part of your contract.
However, a PR company may prefer to focus predominantly on managing your reputation and presence in your
marketplace. So, if they can't do it for you, give us a call.
We already use a graphic designer and a web designer. Can you work with them?
Yes. We almost always work alongside other creative specialists. It's particularly important to make
sure that the words and the design match – and that the message comes through loud and clear once the
words are 'in place'. That's why we always suggest we have an ongoing dialogue with your other creative
contacts. It helps them, too.
We can write the content ourselves. Why do we need a writer?
If you feel confident about 'writing to sell' and writing for the web, that's great. And if you want to
run it by us afterwards via our Message MentorTM
service, just give us a call. Remember though, that an outside writer can see your business and your customers afresh, and so may have some new ideas about how to 'reach' your customers more effectively.
Can you just point us in the right direction and leave us to write it ourselves?
Yes. We have two services to help you do this: Go Undercover
and Aiming For Target. We can also help with editing and
proofreading afterwards, through our Shift Into Shape service.
Is the content really that important? People don't read it anyway.
If it's 'just a few words' off the top of someone's head and it doesn't work hard to really hook the
reader then, yes, that's correct. People won't read it! But why would you spend money on a web site or
graphic design and print only to scupper your chances of a good return because the content doesn't sell?
It will be expensive, won't it?
Marketing is an investment. If it's not, it's not worth doing. Work out what you want from your
marketing, and then plan what investments will bring you a return. Marketing copywriting helps you bring
in that return.
What about confidentiality?
Anything you send us or tell us about your business that is not in the public domain will remain
strictly confidential.
My own words seem a bit dull! What can I do?
Send them to Content Creation. We'll help you shape them into something that tempts your reader instead!
